The Florida Cracker cow camp at Lake Kissimmee provides an authentic living history experience of cattle ranching in 19th-century Florida — one of the state's oldest traditions.
Lake Kissimmee is part of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, a 45-mile-long chain historically connected to Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades.
The park is one of the best places in Florida to observe snail kites — a rare raptor found only in South and Central Florida that feeds exclusively on apple snails.
Cow Camp Living History
Weekend demonstrations of Florida Cracker cattle ranching with costumed cowhunters, open-fire cooking, and working Florida Cracker horses and cattle.
One of the premier birding sites in Florida — the wet prairies and lake edges attract hundreds of sandhill cranes, snail kites, bald eagles, osprey, and Florida scrub-jays. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, Florida panther (rare), and gopher tortoises are present. Lake Kissimmee supports world-class bass fishing and is part of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes.
The living history cow camp program on weekends is a unique and authentic glimpse into 19th-century Florida cattle ranching life — highly recommended. Birding is exceptional year-round, especially for snail kites and sandhill cranes. The lake is one of Florida's finest largemouth bass fisheries. Campsites are quiet and uncrowded compared to more popular parks.
Mosquitoes are intense during summer and after rain — bring strong repellent. Alligators are common throughout. Some hiking trails flood seasonally.
