Fall & Winter
Alafia River State Park is built on reclaimed phosphate mining land — the unusual hilly terrain (for Florida) was created by the dragline mining equipment.
The park's mountain bike trails are consistently rated among the best in the entire eastern United States by IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association).
What was once scarred industrial land now supports gopher tortoises, bald eagles, and dozens of other wildlife species — a remarkable conservation transformation.
Epic Rides / MTB Races
Several organized mountain bike races and group rides use the park's trail system during the cooler dry season.
The park's reclaimed phosphate mining land has been transformed into a wildlife haven. Home to white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, gopher tortoises, bald eagles, osprey, and sandhill cranes. The Alafia River forms the park's north boundary and supports alligators, otters, and good bass fishing. The unique terrain of hills and valleys from mining creates diverse microhabitats.
The mountain bike trail system is outstanding and the main draw — over 50 miles of technical singletrack at all levels. Rent bikes at the trailhead concession if you don't have your own. Equestrian trail users should check trail conditions before visiting (muddy after rain). The river is excellent for bank fishing.
Mountain bike trails are challenging — helmets required. Horses and bikes share some trails — yield appropriately. Alligators are present near the river. Equestrian trails require prior experience on horseback.
